In this conversation, I picked Gareth’s brain on the future of knowledge creation in an increasingly digitized world, his role as a leader, and the opportunities for Africans. Captured in his statement “What an exciting time to be alive” is what sets Gareth’s tone on many of the topics discussed. He is convinced that Africans are in a good position right now to continue developing new industries and take advantage of the opportunities locally and internationally.
My personal learning was how I got to meet Gareth through an engagement on Instagram. I made a comment on one of his posts and asked to meet with him and he agreed. As simple as that! This interaction underscores the power of digital media in the new millennium. Relationships and networks are growing through a double tap or a like button on social media, what’s next? Another penny drop moment from my chat with Gareth was when I asked him about his leadership approach. He said “If I leave the world a little better than how I found it, then I have done something worthwhile”. This statement resembled a type of leader that was engaged, attuned to the context, cared about positive change, and a collective, long term vision that extended beyond him.

This reminds me of a quote below that I had read about ubuntu:
Gareth’s approach to leadership reflected this “common search for a better world”. In not too many words, I found myself once again sitting in front of a leader who embodied an ubuntu type of leadership.
